The likes of which have not been seen at auction in recent memory, a glazed Victorian reliquary sold very well at Cordy's November antique sale.
Estimated at $280-480 it realised almost ten times the lower estimate to sell at $2,000 (hammer price).
What I presume is the star piece of what has been an amazing collection of Japanese items sold over the last few sales, a Japanese Buddhist shrine shot past the $1,500 estimate to reach $14,500.
This one looked to be of outstanding quality.
These were unusual items for a New Zealand auction, and I think we can say that the market likes the unusual. (e.c.)
