Dunbar Sloane's 'New Zealand and International Fine Art Sale' on June 3rd featured a Self Portrait painting by Fahey, entitled Self Portrait in Augusta’s Bedroom. A large work, measuring 1210 x 600 mm that had been included in the Fahey touring retrospective exhibition from last year, it was estimated at $4,000-7,000 and sold for almost three times the top estimate at $20,000.
Later in the month, Webbs ‘Art to Date’ Sale on 29 June featured lot 239, an untitled work, measuring 860 x 585 mm. Estimated at $5,000 - $7,000 it more than doubled its highest estimate at $15,275.
This shows both an increased market interest in female artists and how a retrospective show can positively effect values of paintings by the featured artists.
