The Collection of Dame Judith te Tomairangi o Te Aroha Binney and Sebastian Black went up for auction on Thursday night (4 June) at Art + Object. Watching the sale via video link through Live Auctioneers, it seemed very busy especially for the mid range priced items. There were two stand out lots that achieved record prices. The above work by Brent Wong was lot 33, entitled 'Capitulation' and measuring 905 x 1265 mm it fetched $146,560 (incl. BP) over the lower estimate of $90,000. Lot 30 a work by Greer Twiss featuring sculptural native bird elements together with a sound component; an audio performance of recorded reading of the journals of Captain Cook - sold above the $25,000 estimate to reach $49,245 (incl. BP) hopefully this work is destined for one of our institutions.
