Antique & Art is now fully booked for this year.
Any new appointment will be for our return on 10th January 2022. Thank you to everyone who commissioned a valuation over this last year, we very much appreciate your support. Our gallery will be open in the new year, if you wish to visit us in Te Aroha. We hope you have fun on your much deserved safe travels this summer. The art collection of Adrian Burr & Peter Tatham went under the hammer last night at Art + Object. The sale was pitched to be the highest grossing art sale in New Zealand's history and proved more successful than imagined.
The sale broke record auction prices for many artists including John Pule, John Edgar, Russell Clark, Paul Dibble, Shane Cotton, Bill Hammond and Chris Charteris. The work that realised the most was A Peak in Darien a life-sized bronze of a bull on a piano by Michael Parekōwhai. The work was part of his exhibition at the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011 and others will recognise it as similar to the piece which sits outside the Christchurch Art Gallery. It was estimated to realise between $900,000 and $1,400,000 but the bidding didn't stop until the hammer went down at $1,700,000 (hammer price). This beats the previous record of Tainui Canoe by Colin McCahon that sold at Art + Object in 2016 for $1,350,000. The sale totalled over $11,000,000 (hammer price) at the end of the night. Part two of the sale featuring Decorative Arts starts this morning at 9am. Streaming online is available through A+O's website if you are interested. (e.c.) The likes of which have not been seen at auction in recent memory, a glazed Victorian reliquary sold very well at Cordy's November antique sale.
Estimated at $280-480 it realised almost ten times the lower estimate to sell at $2,000 (hammer price). What I presume is the star piece of what has been an amazing collection of Japanese items sold over the last few sales, a Japanese Buddhist shrine shot past the $1,500 estimate to reach $14,500. This one looked to be of outstanding quality. These were unusual items for a New Zealand auction, and I think we can say that the market likes the unusual. (e.c.) Dunbar Sloane held their latest antique auction on October 27th. The star lots of the sale were both peak Art Deco - a Clarice Cliff vase with a rare pattern and a Rene Lalique figure from 1924. Both are illustrated above.
The Clarice Cliff vase was estimated at $2,000-3,000 and sold for $6,000. The figure was estimated at $5,000-8,000 and sold for an amazing $30,000. Although always in fashion, I have certainly noticed an increase in the desirability of Art Deco pieces to include more utilitarian pieces of furniture. Good news! Our office is now open. You can visit us for an appraisal, valuation or to see our gallery at
136 Whitaker Street, Te Aroha. Our current Covid-19 Level 2 hours are Thursday - Saturday 12-4pm or by appointment. If you have a large collection or are located outside the Waikato - don't worry, we travel to you. Antique & Art is pleased to announce that we will be opening an office space next month.
Situated in the beautiful Waikato spa town of Te Aroha, we are working at getting it painted and looking good for visitors. As mentioned in our Instagram post we hope to also have antique and arty pieces in the window for sale. We will let you know when we are up and running and hope you will come to Te Aroha for a visit. Our wee town is only 15 mins from the bridge before the L&P bottle if you know Paeroa, you know! |
