Looking through the Sotheby's catalogue of 'Deborah, Duchess of Devonshire: The last of the Mitford Sisters' online I noticed this oil of a "Fancy Rooster" by our best bird painter Raymond Ching. The Duchess was a chicken fancier and there are many beautiful pieces in the catalogue featuring the bird. The sale is tomorrow March 2nd in London. Image: Sotheby's
Some lovely words and images from the Dowse here.
(Picture is by John Lake of Installation at the Dowse touring exhibition His Own Steam) You may have heard or seen this emotive clip late last year from The Antiques Roadshow (UK) of an appraisal of a Hei Tiki dug up in a garden in England. I was reading an article yesterday about an archaeological dig under London's Liverpool Street Station and it was hard to miss this: This stone Patu was found in the rubble of a construction site at Old Kent Road. It is now in the Museum of London's Collection. How did these taonga end up in the earth half a world away? Read the article by National Geographic here.
Cordy's Auctions are the first to get into gear after the Christmas Break. Their first auction of 2016 is tomorrow, see the catalogue here.
Merry Christmas to everyone we have met and worked with this year! I hope you all have a restful Christmas break. We are now closed for 2015 and will be back to work early January. With a few big jobs lined up already we won't be full steam ahead until late January 2016. Please email us with any queries during the holiday season.
Five delicate artworks by Rick Rudd have been stolen from the iSite Gallery on Taupo Quay sometime before the floods hit the town. If you know anything or have seen these somewhere contact Whanganui Police on 06 349 0600. Please click on this link here to see the other 4 works.
The Collection of Dame Judith te Tomairangi o Te Aroha Binney and Sebastian Black went up for auction on Thursday night (4 June) at Art + Object. Watching the sale via video link through Live Auctioneers, it seemed very busy especially for the mid range priced items. There were two stand out lots that achieved record prices. The above work by Brent Wong was lot 33, entitled 'Capitulation' and measuring 905 x 1265 mm it fetched $146,560 (incl. BP) over the lower estimate of $90,000. Lot 30 a work by Greer Twiss featuring sculptural native bird elements together with a sound component; an audio performance of recorded reading of the journals of Captain Cook - sold above the $25,000 estimate to reach $49,245 (incl. BP) hopefully this work is destined for one of our institutions.
Possibly due to the record price of the sale of the of Simpson & His Donkey earlier this year, another one is to go on to the auction block. In July International Art Centre is selling the larger scale work (90 x 60 cm) that has been on long term loan to Auckland War Memorial Museum for 30 years. It belongs to Auckland Commerce Club and is expected to fetch between $300,000 - $500,000.
